A milk vendor was taken into custody on Tuesday for selling cow urine and cow dung as treatment for COVID-19 in a roadside shop in the city of Dankuni.
The man named Mabud Ali and the Hooghly district police arrested him for cheating and hurting religious sentiments.
Ali started selling these two merchandise on Monday claiming that consuming them can help one prevents contracting the Coronavirus. He said he was inspired by the Hindu Mahasabha event in Delhi.
Ali sold cow dung for Rs 500 a kilogram and a liter of cow urine has the same price.
He placed some jars of urine and packs of cow dung on a stall on the National Highway 19 that links Kolkata and Delhi. The event he mentioned was a gomutra party took place on the 14th of March and organized by the Hindu Mahasabha.
Ali said that he owned two cows, one is of the Jersey breed and the other is Indian cow. He made a living selling milk and when he knew some people consumes bovine excreta at the gomutra party to ward off COVID-19, he got the idea of selling them to make more profit. In this way, he can sell almost anything, from milk, dung, to cow urine.
However, there is a distinction between the price for Jersey cow’s urine and dung and those of an Indian cow. The former was priced at Rs. 300, Rs. 200 cheaper than the price for the latter.
The reason here is Indian cow’s urine is higher in demand because jersey cows are not pure breed.
