Commuters Can Now Access Free WiFi On Delhi Metro Trains

Delhi Metro has achieved another milestone in its journey as commuters can now access free WiFi on the Airport Express Line.

Delhi Metro has achieved another milestone in its journey as commuters can now access free WiFi on the Airport Express Line. Since 2016, free WiFi service has been provided on several metro stations by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. However, this is the first time that commuters can use this service while they are on a train.

From the official tweet below, you can see that Dr. Mangu Singh, Managing Director of DMRC was the one who launched the “Free High-Speed Wi-Fi.” The service covers 22.7 kilometers at six metro stations.

According to DMRC officials, commuters can use the WiFi service for free. For each metro train, the target speed is 300Mpbs. The service has no limitation in terms of traffic volumes or download speeds per user.

A 2-level network has been employed for the deployment of the WiFi service. What it uses is known as a T2T or train-to-tunnel radio network. The signal reaches a portable station which is aboard head cars from base stations locating inside the tunnels. For the next level, DMRC transmits the signal using the Wireless Access Point set up in each metro car.

How commuters can access free WiFi on Delhi Metro

If you are onboard the Airport Express Line which is the orange line, you can switch on your smartphone’s WiFi and search for the “METROWIFI_Free” network. There is no password but you’ll have to register your phone number on a browser page.

After you type in your phone number, you will receive an OTP. Then you can use the WiFi. During your 24-minute ride, you can freely use the Internet.

The free WiFi service will be expanded to other lines besides the orange line later in 2020.
