If you are still thinking that the Earth has only one Moon, you are so wrong! In recent time, scientists have claimed that there are two extra Moons orbiting. What a surprise!
At the Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary, a new study has shocked the whole world with the argument of up to three Moons orbiting the Earth. One Moon, as we are so familiar, is still said to be unique and is often the inspiration for song, poetry, and film. How about the two other Moons? We always neglect them because they are just mysterious dust clouds.
According to the scientists, these two Moons are approximately 402336 km away from us. The distance is equal to the distance from the first Moon to the Earth. Fortunately, the scientists took images of their appearance.
In fact, these dust clouds have been detected since decades ago. The first time scientists knew about their existence was in 1961; however, they may have been around for a long time.
They were named after Kazimierz Kordylewski, a Polish astronomer, who was the first to recognize them.
One of the study’s authors, Judit Slíz-Balogh said to National Geographic that the Kordylewski clouds were among the most difficult objects to spot and almost only researchers in astronomy can watch them from the Earth. He called them dusty pseudo-satellites.
The Kordylewski clouds are approximately 15 by 10 degrees wide. In other words, they are 9 times wider than the Earth. Despite their huge dimension, they are made of tiny particles. These two Moons are so faint that we can hardly see them even when they are lit by sunlight.
The dust in these two Moons always moving according to the Earth’s or Moon’s gravity. Besides that, they are constantly collecting dust from some sources such as the Perseid meteor.
The new study may bring a new chance to those who care about missions relating to space in the future. They may be scientists or spaceflight companies like SpaceX or Blue Origin.
