The COVID-19 outbreak has made us realize how important it is to maintain personal hygiene as soap is the true enemy of viruses. However, with conventional sanitizer dispensers in public places, people have to touch the lever for the sanitizer to be dispensed, thus reducing its effectiveness.
To deal with this problem, student Siddh Sanghvi from Dubai’s Spring Dales School has come up with a new way to dispense sanitizer.
Making use of STEM technology, he wanted to build a machine that can automatically dispense the sanitizer without people having to touch the lever.
With that in mind, he used the Lego Technic that is similar to those classic Lego blocks but is more complex to build a robot. The robot comes with a sensor capable of detecting hands from 30cm away.
Once it detects hands, the articulating block will press on the bottle’s lever to dispense the liquid onto the hands.
To avoid infection, public health experts advise people to clean their hands with water and soap or an alcohol-based solution for at least 20 seconds.
Meanwhile, in India, due to the hand sanitizer shortage after people flocking to stores to stocking up on this product. People are searching for hand sanitizers because of their convenience when water and soap aren’t available. Hand sanitizers like Dettol and Himalaya couldn’t be found in drug stores. Their prices have also been hiked, just like the face masks.
And to deal with sanitizer shortage, the Department of Chemistry of IIT Delhi has decided to make its own hand sanitizers. The formulation of the hand sanitizers produced by IIT Delhi Aloe Vera and three other chemicals. Isopropyl alcohol (75%) is a major component.
