6. Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal

Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal passed away at the age of 21 when he was a member of the 17 Poona Horse regiment.

Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal was born in Pune. He passed away at the age of 21 when he was a member of the 17 Poona Horse regiment. It was during the Battle of Basantar, the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War that he received the Param Vir Chakra for his bravery.

Khetarpal displayed his strong will and immense courage when the Pakistani armor counterattacked at Jarpal, the Shakargarh sector in Dec 1971.

Although Khetarpal belonged to a different squadron, he still rushed to help, charging forward, penetrating the enemy’s defenses with his tanks to capture Pakistani infantry and weapons.

Even when the enemy killed his troops’ commander, Khetarpal continued attacking the enemy until they pulled back their tanks. He even destroyed one of the withdrawing tanks.

The enemy then prepared for a second attack. And Khetarpal’s sector became their target this time. The attack was swift and severe. Despite his injury, Khetarpal still managed to attack 10 enemy tanks. He remained his position even when he was asked to leave. The attack of his own tank resulted in his death.

Major Somnath Sharma was a brave soldier from the Fourth Kumaon regiment.

Major Somnath Sharma was a brave soldier from the Fourth Kumaon regiment. He passed away at the age of 24. His hand was already injured in a hockey game but Sharma insisted on joining his troop in combat as they were airlifted to Srinagar to fight Pakistani invaders on October 30, 1947.

On November 3, when his troop was patrolling Badgam village, a tribal Lashkar with 700 raiders approached them from Gulmarg. The enemy surrounded them from three sides. As a result of the heavy mortal bombardment, they suffered from heavy casualties. The troop realized that if they abandoned their positions at the moment, Srinagar, as well as the airport, would be in danger. So Sharma went on encouraging his men to continue fighting even when they were outnumbered.

When their firing power was adversely affected by the heavy casualties, Sharma with his injured left hand, went to filling the magazines for the soldiers who operated light machine guns. The explosion of a mortar shell on nearby ammunition resulted in his death.

Sharma was the first soldier to receive the Param Vir Chakra.

8. Naik Jadu Nath Singh

Naik Jadu Nath Singh was the Param Vir Chakra’s fourth recipient.

Naik Jadu Nath Singh was the Param Vir Chakra’s fourth recipient. He took part in the 1947/1948 Indo-Pak war in Jammu and Kashmir. His strong will and courage saved his post thrice. On February 6, 1948, Singh was a commander of a troop to guard a forward post at Tain Dhar.

The Pakistanis then attacked to take this post. During the attack, Singh displayed his superb leadership which helped push away the enemy. With four wounded soldiers, the troop needed to be re-organized to face another attack.

When all of his soldiers including him were wounded, he took an injured gunner’s Bren gun and kept on fighting. His fire was devastating enough that it saved the post for the second time.

All of his men were dead. And the Pakistanis attacked for the third time. Sharma, wounded and alone, protected the post. The enemy was surprised and retreated in confusion. However, Sharma was hit with two bullets in his chest and head and died instantly.

9. Subedar Karam Singh

Subedar Karam Singh was the first non-posthumous recipient of the Param Vir Chakra.

Subedar Karam Singh was bỏn in Sehna village, the Sangrur District of Punjab. He was the first non-posthumous recipient of the Param Vir Chakra. In 1948, he retired as an Honorary Captain from the Indian Army. In 1993, he passed away at the age of 77. Karam Singh was the only Indian to receive the highest medals from both the Indian and British governments.

He is best known for his bravery on the event of October 13, 1948. That day, to retake Richhmar Gali, Pakistan launched a brigade attack. The firing so devastating that it destroyed all Indian platoon’s bunkers. Singh’s communication with the commander was cut off. So he couldn’t ask for reinforcements or updating his situations.

He had nothing but one choice left, to continue fighting the enemy with whatever he had. Karam Singh was severely injured but that didn’t take away his spirit. Even when the enemy came close, he refused to leave his post. When the enemy soldiers approached him, Karam Singh jumped from his trench and killed two intruders.

10. Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran

Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran passed away in 1987, during the Sri Lanka operations of India when he was just 41.

Parameswaran came from Mumbai Maharashtra. He passed away in 1987, during the Sri Lanka operations of India when he was just 41. He posthumously received the Param Vir Chakra.

It was one night when Parameswaran came back from search operations when a group of militants suddenly attacked his column. He didn’t panic and displayed his great thinking and composure by attacking the enemy from the rear. He was shot in the chest by a militant during hand-to-hand combat.

He then snatched the militant’s rifle and shot him dead.

Severely injured, Major Parameswaran continued to give orders till his last breath. During the attack, five militants were killed, two rocket launchers and three rifles were recovered from the militants.
