Xiaomi Mi Watch Hands-On: Cheaper Version Of Apple Watch

Karamchand Rameshwar

Being called as a cheaper version of the Apple Watch, let's see if the first smartwatch from Xiaomi can deliver as good as the "original".

As of Q2 2019, Xiaomi is a leader in the smart wearables segment with a 17.3% market share, according to IDC data. Xiaomi's success mainly comes from the Mi Band lineup. It attracts users mostly because of its low price. However, because of that, Mi Band also clearly shows some limitations in terms of display, features, and design. As the demands for smart wearable devices with sleek and many features like Apple Watch have been increasing, it is clear that Xiaomi can not keep relying on low price as its strength.

Therefore, recently in China, Xiaomi has launched the Xiaomi Mi Watch smartwatch. Mi Watch bears a very similar design to the Apple Watch, including a square watch face, a "Digital Crown" knob, eSIM support, and a software interface with many similarities to its Apple counterpart.

Because it is equipped with many more technologies than Mi Band, the price of Mi Watch is also much higher. In China, the Mi Watch’s price starts from CNY 1,299 (around Rs. 13,200) to CNY 1,999 (around Rs. 20,400), 10 times more expensive than the Mi Band 4. In fact, the price of the Mi Watch is on the same level as the Apple Watch Series 3. Being considered as a clone, the Mi Watch still has a price that is on par with the genuine goods, it is not appreciated by the community. However, like many other Xiaomi products, Xiaomi is expected to drop its price in the near future.

Xiaomi Mi Watch & Apple Watch

Even though the Apple Watch is still better, the Mi Watch has one advantage that the Apple Watch cannot have, and that is Android support. And, for Android users who want a smartwatch that looks and works the Apple Watch, the Mi Watch will be the closest thing they can get.

Mi Watch's box

You don't need to open the box to see the influence of the Apple Watch on the Mi Watch. Their boxes look quite similar.

The back of the box is the hardware configurations and features of the device, which is highlighted by the Snapdragon Wear 3100 chipset. The Mi Watch is one of the first smartwatch equipped with this chipset.

Comes with the Xiaomi Mi Watch is a charging dock and 5W charger. It is sufficient for a device with a low battery capacity like a smartwatch.

It can be said that the Xiaomi Mi Watch is a complete copy of the Apple Watch design. This watch has a square face with a crown and a button on the right side just like the Apple Watch. Its scroll button helps users go through the interface components. Besides the two buttons above, users can also operate with the watch through the 1.78-inch AMOLED screen.

The left side of the device is the speaker and microphone. It supports making and receiving calls directly on the watch through both the Bluetooth connection of the phone and the mobile network, due to its built-in eSIM.

The bottom of the watch is made of ceramic with a heart rate sensor and charging pin.

The strap that comes with the Xiaomi Mi Watch made of soft rubber.

If you do not like the strap that comes with the device, you can easily remove and replace it.

It is only available in a single version of 44mm. Plus the thick body, this is not a watch for those with small wrists.

Like every other smartwatch, the Mi Watch is equipped with many monitoring features such as heart rate, step count, sleep tracking, and other exercises.

At the same price range as the Mi Watch, users will be able to buy an Apple Watch Series 3. In terms of hardware, the two products of Apple and Xiaomi are not too different in terms of exterior design, features, and functionality.

In fact, the MIUI for Watch interface (based on Google's Wear OS) has a few similarities with the watchOS. However, watchOS has a much better apps ecosystem.
