Oppo Reno 3 Pro 5G Hands-On: Curved Screen, Snapdragon 765G, Quad Rear Cameras

The announcement of two new Reno 3 smartphones shows that OPPO is now ready to usher in the era of more affordable 5G phones. In this article, let's take a quick look at the OPPO Reno 3 Pro 5G to see if this smartphone has anything else aside from the 5G connectivity.

Starting with the design, OPPO Reno 3 Pro 5G has a "hyperboloid" design on both the front and back. This means that not only the glass back of the phone has curved edges, but also the front glass of the device also 3D curved on the two sides. This is certainly not only aesthetically pleasing but also gives the user a comfortable grip on the hand.

Ever since OPPO first started teasing the device, the company has emphasized that the Reno 3 Pro 5G is only 7.7mm thick and weighs 171 grams. The only protruding part of the phone is the vertical camera cluster at the back.

The OPPO Reno 3 Pro 5G has an AMOLED screen with a size of 6.5 inches, Full-HD + resolution, and a 90Hz refresh rate. As mentioned, the company doesn’t go for the ‘shark-fin’ pop-up camera design on the two new phones like they did on the Oppo Reno and Oppo Reno 2 series. Instead, they use the punch-hole display on the Pro model and a water-drop notched display on the vanilla Reno 3.

The cut-out is placed on the upper left side of the display, housing a selfie camera. The screen on this machine has a 20: 9 aspect ratio combined with thin borders, and those help the phone reach a screen-to-body ratio of 91.1%. According to OPPO, you can experience the screen with a touch response speed of up to 180Hz, HDR 10+ color gamut, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut and 1100 nits maximum brightness. Those are all very impressive numbers.

Qualcomm's new processor, Snapdragon 765G chipset is used by OPPO on the Reno 3 Pro and this is the second phone in the world powered by this SoC (Redmi K30 5G is the first device). The chipset is combined with up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Additionally, the smartphone is running the company's ColorOS 7 interface, based on Android 10.

Switching to the camera, OPPO Reno 3 Pro 5G has a quad-camera system at the back. This setup includes the 48 MP Sony IMX586 main sensor, combined with an 8 MP ultra-wide lens with a 115-degree field of view, a 13 MP telephoto lens with a 5x hybrid zoom, and a 2MP macro lens that allows you to shoot close-up the subject at a distance of 2.5cm.

There is also a 32MP selfie camera in the hole in the upper left corner of the screen. The OPPO Reno 3 Pro is the brand's first phone to offer Ultra Steady 2.0 anti-shake movie technology.

OPPO Reno 3 Pro may be quite thin, but inside the body, there is still a large battery with a capacity of 4,025mAh, which could power the phone for a full day. The company also offers VOOC 4.0 fast charging technology for the device and comes with a 30W USB Type-C fast charger inside the retail box.

The phone will be available in 2 configurations: 8GB RAM + 128GB storage and 12GB RAM + 256GB storage. The base model will cost CNY 3,999 (about Rs. 40,900) while you will have to spend CNY 4,499 (about Rs. 46,000) for the 12 GB model.

The smartphone will be available in four attractive color variants: Black, White, Starry Night, and Sunrise. There is also a Classic Blue color variant exclusively for the Pro model. The variant is priced at CNY 4,199 (around Rs. 42,900) and it looks great. The OPPO Reno 3 Pro 5G is expected to compete directly with the recently launched Redmi K30 5G in the mid-range segment in China but at a higher price. It will be on shelves from December 31 in the country. The Oppo Reno 3 Pro 5G price in India should be at the same level as the Chinese price.
