OPPO A5 2020 is one of the mid-range smartphones OPPO has launched in the A-series alongside the OPPO A3 2020 and A9 2020. The A5 2020 and A9 2020 are quite similar to each other, but the former has a more superior camera setup. At a price of Rs. 13,990, the OPPO A5 2020 seems to be a decent pick if you are looking for an all-around smartphone.
OPPO A5 2020 review
OPPO A5 2020: Price in India
The phone is offered in three variants:
- 3GB RAM + 64GB storage: Rs.9,990
- 4GB RAM + 64GB storage: Rs. 13,990
- 6GB RAM + 128GB storage: Rs. 14,990
OPPO A5 2020: Display
The A5 2020 is equipped with a 6.5” display, which is pretty large. Along with relatively thin side and top bezels, the handset is pretty comfortable to hold on hands. There is a water-drop notch at the top of the display, which is where the selfie camera is placed. It is still somewhat distracting, but not too much and you will probably forget it after some time. Above the notch is a speaker grille, which delivers a decent sound when making calls. Sadly, the OPPO A5 2020 display only supports HD+ resolution, which is quite disappointing for a sub-Rs .15,000 smartphone.
OPPO A5 2020: Performance
The OPPO A5 2020 specs include a Snapdragon 665, which is the same one used inside the A9 2020. This is an octa-core chipset with four Kryo 260 Silver cores and four Kryo 260 Gold cores. The handset is available in three memory configurations - 3GB + 64GB, 4GB + 64GB, and 6GB + 128GB.
Overall, the performance of this phone is great at the price point. During my time with the phone, there were occasional pauses at times and apps took a bit longer to load in comparison to more high-end phones. However, I didn’t notice any unpleasant lag that would heavily affect my experience.
As for gaming, you won’t find any smartphones in this price range that can deliver a solid experience. You can still play your favorite games like PUBG Mobile on this phone, but many of them will only be playable at low graphics settings.
PUBG Mobile and Ark: Survival Evolved can run on this device but only at low graphics. However, they still look good even at low settings. Asphalt 9 appears to be a little bit too much for the OPPO A5 2020 to handle as I did see some lags or stutters while playing the game.
OPPO A5 2020: Cameras
The OPPO A5 (2020) comes with a quad-camera lens system at the back, including a 12MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens with a 119-degree viewing angle, and two 2MP lenses for portrait shots. Only the first two are the ones that will deliver decent outcomes in most lighting conditions.
The photographic performance of this phone is quite a mixed bag - not really in a good way. Most budget smartphones only perform well in daylight and the quality will drop substantially indoor or in low-light conditions. You can easily see the muddiness and blurring of the photos when zooming in.
In low-light conditions, the photos are still useable but see a huge drop in details in comparison to day-light shots. The dedicated night mode isn’t really helpful as it makes a pretty bad attempt at brightening the photos up.
As for the ultra-wide lens, it is not as good as the main unit but is still a great choice for taking wider landscape shots or fitting more objects and people in the frame.
If your priority is camera quality, the OPPO A9 2020 is certainly a better pick, as it comes with a 48MP main sensor and offers overall better photos.
You will get a single 8MP camera on the front for picturing selfies. The outcomes look fine for sharing on social media.
OPPO A5 2020: Battery
Battery life is the most impressive thing about this phone. I’m quite impressed how OPPO managed to pack a 5,000 mAh battery inside a relatively thin body of the A5 2020. The battery life of this phone is also great for my medium to heavy usage. If you don’t spend too much time on your phone, it could last for up to two days.
Sadly, the phone only supports regular 10W charging, so it is best to charge your phone at night as it might take a while to refill the large 5,000 mAh battery. One good thing is that it has a USB Type-C port, not the outdated micro-USB one.
