The Nexus series is Google’s iconic product line, but some of the previous models didn’t live up to users’ expectations. With the Nexus 6P, Google is trying to bring to its customers an excellent high-end smartphone that can compete against the current flagships. The handset is released in partnership with Huawei. In this review, we will talk in more detail about the Nexus 6P benchmarks, display, performance, camera, battery life.
Nexus 6P Benchmarks Review: Design
The Nexus 6P has a refreshing design as a result of the partnership with Huawei. It features a full metal unibody design with a flat display, helping users handle this large phone. All of the buttons are placed on the right side and have solid tactile feedback. The power button is textured so you will have no problem finding it without looking. There are also a USB-C port at the bottom edge and a headphone jack at the top.
Nexus 6P Benchmarks Review: Display
On the front, it rocks a 5.7-inch display along with a dual-speaker setup. The display uses an AMOLED panel with Quad-HD+ (1,440 x 2,560p) resolution and a pixel density of 518ppi. The AMOLED panel with Quad-HD+ resolution offers an excellent viewing experience. It shows true colors with deep blacks, allowing for a high level of contrast.
Nexus 6P Benchmarks Review: Performance
Powering the Nexus 6P is the Snapdragon 810 chipset, paired with 3GB RAM. The chipset had been reported to have heating issues on several smartphones, but that was fixed by an update. During our time with the phone, there weren’t any performance and heating issues.
We could comfortably use the phone for all sorts of tasks, including surfing the web, running apps, watching videos, or playing demanding games like Dead Trigger 2. All the apps loaded quickly with a short waiting time and no lag or stutter.
The Nexus 6P benchmarks are also pretty high and in line with other Snapdragon 810-powered smartphones. It achieved a score of 54,778 points on AnTutu and 27,422 points on Quadrant. On GFXbench, it scored 36fps. As expected, we did notice the phone getting warm after gaming for a while, but it was not really significant and less than many other smartphones on the market.
The LTE and Wi-Fi networks were stable and voice calls were clear and loud. However, we felt that the vibration was a little weak and needs some work as we sometimes couldn’t feel the vibration when keeping the phone in our pockets.
Nexus 6P Benchmarks Review: Cameras
The camera department is where previous Nexus smartphones failed to impress its users. However, Google seems to fix the issue and deliver an excellent camera quality on the Nexus 6P.
Around the back, there is a 12.3 MP camera with an f/2.0 lens, Laser AF, and HDR. Sadly, the camera doesn’t have OIS (optical image stabilization), which is a major letdown, especially for recording videos.
You can easily access the camera app by double-clicking on the standby button. The app loaded very fast, but it appears to lack some of the manual settings like what we got on Samsung and LG smartphones. You can solve the issue by installing a third-party app.
We can see that the Nexus 6P captures accurate colors and a good amount of detail. The device can quickly lock onto the subjects with the laser-assisted focus system and that is a great help in taking macro shots. It might take a bit more time in low-light conditions, but that is also the issue for other smartphones. Overall, the photo quality is great, on par with the iPhone 6S Plus, LG G4, and Galaxy S7. Photos have accurate colors, lots of details, and are not overexposed. The auto HDR mode is also excellent, though it requires a bit of time to process.
The results in day-light conditions are impressive, but we are more surprised with the Nexus 6P-’s low-light capabilities. The only downside is the lack of OIS, meaning you have to try harder to keep the smartphone still.
Here are some camera samples:
Nexus 6P Benchmarks Review: Battery Life
The Nexus 6P has a relatively big battery in comparison to other smartphones on the market like Moto X Play or Galaxy S7 Active. Its 3,450 mAh battery can fuel the phone for around one day or a bit more with heavy usage.
It is even better when the phone supports 15W fast charging, allowing its battery to refill from 0 to 100 percent in 1 hour and 36 minutes. It is however still slightly slower than Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 or Samsung’s Fast Charging. For example, Samsung Galaxy Note 5 or Galaxy S7 need 1 hour and 20 minutes to fill back up.
