Chipmaker Qualcomm has surprisingly introduced its second flagship SoC for 2019. Accordingly, Snapdragon 855 Plus is a faster model of Snapdragon 855 SoC. It is tipped to be packed on some devices which are set to be unveiled in the second half of this year. This is similar to the launch of Qualcomm Snapdragon 821, a Snapdragon 820’s faster version.

It is known that the new chipset will have Kryo 485 CPU cores clocked at 2.96 GHz while those on its sibling Snapdragon 855 are only clocked at 2.84 GHz. In addition, the chipset also comes with Adreno 640 GPU, which also gains an 15 percent increase in speed.
The chipmaker states that the improvement in the GPU helps the new chipset become an ideal choice for gaming phones. Additionally, it is also useful for VR and AR devices.
However, the chipset does not come with new X55 modem. In case the phone makers still want to equip this chipset for their 5G smartphones, they will need to separately set up X50 modem.

Snapdragon 855 Plus will be introduced in several devices within this year. Although there has been no information about the manufacturers so far, it is said that the Pixel 4/XL and OnePlus 7T/7T Pro phones are likely to pack this new chipset. Besides, Xiaomi could also introduce this SoC in its Mi MIX 4.
The release of flagship Snapdragon 855 Plus is timely since it will compete with Huawei-made Kirin 985 SoC that is expected to feature on the Huawei Mate 30 lineup and Samsung-made Exynos 9825 expected to be used on the upcoming Galaxy Note 10 lineup.
Snapdragon 855 Soc announced late 2018 led to a generation of high-end Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S10, LG G8, and OnePlus 7 Pro, which have felt lag-free and more responsive than ever before. Whether the 855 Plus will make a highlighted upgrade to that speed remains to be seen. Let’s stay tuned for the official launch of the Snapdragon 855 Plus-powered smartphones to find out.
