While we have to wait till next year to officially welcome the new 5G network, global smartphone makers across the world are racing to earn their own milestone on the use of 5G.
Joining the game and quickly catching up with others, last weekend, Oppo announced something interesting. It successfully conducted the first video call with 5G network in the world, including multi parties on a smartphone app.

Shen Yiren, Oppo Vice President, went on Weibo for the big announcement, saying the company completed the world first WeChat video call on a smartphone with 5G connection.
Shenzhen, 12:57 AM local time, Oppo engineers at six R&D institutes around the world joined the video call on a Chinese social app, WeChat, with an opening message saying “Hello Oppo, Hello 5G.”
The Chinese phone maker posted a video of the call, the world first 5G call was done on an R15 Pro which is connected via the 5G network. The group 5G video call was 17 minutes long, with 100 MHz frequency, announced by a spokesman from Oppo.

The engineers who participated in this call from six different locations in the world claimed low latency and smooth connectivity while on call. To test the 5G, Oppo made use of 5G NR (New Radio) network emulation solutions as well as the UXM test set from Keysight to fix errors and assess the performance of radio frequency bands under 6GHz.
Oppo said this video call is an important milestone provided that the company is working hard to stand among the world first phone makers that launched a 100 percent 5G enabled smartphone next year.
Previously, some of the world’s dominant smartphone manufacturers were said to expect 5G enabled phone launch in 2019, including Samsung with its Galaxy S10 or Galaxy X, Huawei, OnePlus, and Sony. With the 5G race heating up, we can certainly expect a significant advance in mobile connection next year.
