Sony seems to be on track of launching a new phone bearing the J8220 model number, which may be named Sony Xperia 1R. According to the source, the handset could be positioned in the flagship segment with the world’s first 5K display.

Sony has not officially confirmed the Xperia 1R moniker, however, it is tipped to be Xperia 2, according to several rumours in the past time. Xperia 2’s 360-degree video and 5K renders have already appeared, which suggested the handset would feature a compact display with a nearly bezel-less design. Therefore, it is expected that the upcoming Xperia 1R would arrive with these above features instead of Xperia 2.
The UA Prof has not revealed any more information about the upcoming device apart from its 2,160 x 5,040-pixel display. It is known that Xperia 1, the predecessor to the phone, has a 4K (1,664 x 3,840 pixels) display.
The handset debuted at IFA this year as the first device to feature a 21:9 Cinema Wide 4K HDR screen worldwide. It is worth noting that Sony introduced Xperia Z5 in 2015 as the first phone to have a 4K display in the world. And now the brand is preparing for its first 5K smartphone.

At present, there is no much information about the upcoming Xperia 1R. But if the alleged Xperia 2 is actually arriving as Xperia 1R, we could know some possible details of its design. According to the previous rumoured 5K renders, the device could sport a 6.1-inch 21:9 Cinema Widescreen.
The phone is tipped to come with triple rear camera setup. Under the hood, it could be packed with a Snapdragon 855 SoC, paired with 6GB RAM and a 3,200 mAh battery supporting wireless charging. Also, as per the leaks, the handset will not have a headphone jack like the Xperia 1.
So far, Sony has not announced the official launch of the Xperia 1R or Xperia 2. However, some reports suggest that the handset may be unveiled at IFA 2019, which is set to take place at the beginning of September.
