Can you believe it? We saw the first 108MP camera smartphone at the end of last year and now we are about to welcome a smartphone with a whopping 192MP sensor?
The megapixel war is back, as phone makers over the last couple of years have consistently released smartphones with 48MP, 64MP, and even 108MP sensors. However, it seems like they don’t want to stop at 108MP. Recently, a leaker called "Digital Chat Station" has shared an interesting piece of information on his Weibo that a phone with a whopping 192MP sensor is on the way, and hinted that more details will be released in the upcoming month.
The leaker also suggested that the handset will be driven by an SM7250 chipset, which is the codename of the Snapdragon 765. That means that it isn’t a flagship smartphone. Hopefully, with a mid-range chipset, the price of the phone will be not too close to the flagship segment.
In case you don’t know, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765 chipset does support the 192MP sensor, but it only supports snapshots, meaning other photography features like multi-frame processing and HDR won’t certainly be able to take advantage of the whopping resolution.
So which brand is working on a 192MP camera smartphone? Last week, reports suggested that a 5G smartphone from LG was in the works with a Snapdragon 7xx chipset and it is coming next month. But we have also seen Chinese phone maker Xiaomi play big when releasing the first smartphones with 64MP and 108MP sensors, along with Samsung. Anyway, a 192MP sensor would be a quite substantial jump over the 108MP sensor in terms of mere resolution.
And this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of smartphone sensors with higher resolution than expected. Qualcomm has already confirmed that its top-end Snapdragon 865 chipset supports sensors with up to 200MP resolution, adding that it’s working with its partners to work on a 200MP camera sensor.
