Samsung Galaxy Fold Durability Test Shows A Strong Hinge But A Fragile Screen

JerryRigEverything's durability test shows how fragile the Galaxy Fold is, adding to what the care guide the company released not long ago implies

To this point, you might be well aware that the Galaxy Fold is an extremely fragile phone. A few months ago, some reviewers peeled a protective film off, and that broke the screen. So now when JerryRigEverything, the torture tester, had the chance to test the durability of Samsung’s foldable phone, most people are curious about how careful an owner of the phone must be when handling this delicate device.

The first question here is if the issues that caused Samsung to delay the launch of the Galaxy Fold has been fixed. And despite what the company announced, the answer is no.

There has not been much of a change when it comes to the screen of the foldable phone. Since the display is designed to be bent, it must be coated with a plastic layer which is easy to be damaged.

While a typical glass display will show scratches at level 6 or 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, that of the Galaxy Fold can withstand level 2 to 3 only. This means that only your fingernails are enough to cause damage to the screen.

The test of JerryRigEverything also proves that dust will be a severe issue for the phone. When the review devices reached the reviewers a few months ago, the problem of dust getting under the display showed up almost immediately. This test exposes the device to a more severe environment than that, but people living in a dusty area or want to bring the Galaxy Fold to the beach with them will have to clear proof that the device might not be for them.

This durability test is another confirmation of how fragile the Galaxy Fold is, adding to what the care guide the company released not long ago implies.

The video also shows that a nick at the edge of the display can ruin it entirely.

There is one piece of good news though. When the tester tried to bend the device to the wrong side, it could hold up to an extreme level of pressure, proving that the hinge on the Galaxy Fold is quite strong.
