Redmi Successfully Brings In-Display Fingerprint Sensor To LCD Panels

Recently, Lu Weibing - Xiaomi’s VP and Redmi’s GM, has just published a new article on Weibo, sharing a great news that the company has successfully brought the in-display fingerprint sensor to the LCD panel.
Specifically, the Chinese manufacturer has successfully tested the in-display fingerprint sensor with an LCD panel. Currently, this technology is only available on OLED screens, so this is really a remarkable achievement by Xiaomi.
To have a smartphone with a full-screen design, thinner bezels, but retaining important biometric security features, manufacturers have worked very hard to research and develop new technologies.
While many of them put the fingerprint sensor on the back, others mount it into the power button on the side. Although Apple is a leader in the application of 3D facial recognition technology, at the present time, most Android smartphone manufacturers have transitioned to the in-display fingerprint sensor.
The in-display fingerprint sensor technology was first introduced in 2018, is one of the common features on high-end and mid-range smartphone models launched in the past year and this year.
However, this technology has so far only been used on OLED panels. The main reason is that LCD panels do not allow light to pass through the screen, making the under-display fingerprint sensors not function properly. However, in the latest announcement, Lu Weibing said that the Redmi R&D team has overcome this problem and is ready for mass production.
According to Redmi, the company has achieved this success by using IR blaster in combination with high-transmittance film material, allowing light to pass through the screen and allowing the sensor to read the user's fingerprints.
BOE has previously stated that they have found a way to place the fingerprint sensor under the LCD screen, but it seems that Redmi will be the first smartphone manufacturer in the world to apply this technology to its future products, which could be the Redmi K30 Pro or the Redmi Note 9 Pro. The letter has already been shown in real-life photos with no fingerprint sensor at the back.
