Pixel 4's Teardown Shows That Its Screen Is Made By Samsung

With this year’s Pixel 4, Google decides to remove the notch in favor of a top bezel so that all of the new technologies enabled by the Soli chip can work. And with iFixit’s teardown, we finally have a clearer idea of go into the face unlock and gesture controls. The company has to ditch the notch to add something even more intrusive, but the fact that Google managed to squeeze that much tech into such a small room on top of the phone is impressive enough.

The picture down below shows what the bezel is made of. From left to right, we have an ambient light sensor, next to it is the earpiece, and the Soli radar is the gray/green rectangles. Other parts are the system for face unlock and the camera. Their compact sizes explain why Google is able to keep the whole top bezel small while offering all of the needed new techs.

According to iFixit’s teardown, the 90Hz display is really challenging to remove. And the technician had to take almost the entire phone apart to take it out. With the huge amount of adhesive and the edge-to-edge display, it is impossible to remove the screen intact. However, this is not exactly something alarming as when you find yourself in need of removing the display; it might have been broken anyway.

Surprisingly, the screen is made by Samsung, yet we have not seen any of its own phones have the 90Hz. However, this might be a hint of what next year’s Samsung Galaxy might pack.

Pixel 4 gets the repairability score of 4 out of 10, meaning it is not an easy to fix smartphone for most consumers. So if you own one and its screen is broken, for example, you had better take it to a professional.
