OnePlus Confirms That OnePlus 6T Would Get An In-display Fingerprint Sensor

OnePlus first features an optical in-display fingerprint scanner on the new flagship OnePlus 6T. Samsung and Qualcomm have already developed this advanced technology.

OnePlus confirms officially the release day of OnePlus 6T on October 30. The Chinese company reveals on Weibo about the new flagship’s fingerprint sensor. The new device will be implemented an optical in-display fingerprint sensor as a substitute to an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.

The sonic based sensor is offering a superior against optical fingerprint reader. Unlike optical fingerprint reader, an ultrasonic fingerprint reaches and analyses pores and ridges to establish a more complete 3D image of user’s fingerprint to unlock the screen.

Samsung is using the Qualcomm’s latest ultrasonic sensor to implement 3D fingerprint authentication into its own device. The first ultrasonic scanner came out in 2015 and a follow-up was disclosed in June 2017.

Qualcomm has developed a third generation and it meets the requirements of Samsung. The Vivo and Oppo have released handsets with an optical in-display sensor.

The major drawback of with optical sensor is that it’s not difficult to fool since the technology only captures a 2D picture, prosthetics and even other high-quality images can fool it. This type of fingerprint scanner is not secure enough for your sensitive data. But it would be able to offer faster response time.

However, it’s quite difficult to state that optical fingerprint scanner on the OnePlus 6T will less secure than the authentication technology on the Samsung Galaxy 10. OnePlus could implement several software advancements as well as a robust hardware to ensure secure highly even using in-display fingerprint sensor.

Last week, in a forum, Lau had underlined the efforts that the company had to go through before releasing an optical in-display fingerprint scanner on the new flagship. Lau supposed not just a module being the back of the screen, Screen UnLock includes hardware components and software processes.

The engineer says that an optical fingerprint module housing a small lens that can read accurately user’s fingerprint when he presses the finger down on the glass plate. The screen works as a light source to intensify the form of user’s fingerprint, allow the sensor to read its exact shape and dimension.
