You Must Try These Camera Features On The iPhone 12 Pro And iPhone 12 Pro Max

For those who have spent a lot of extra money to get the Pro and Pro Max versions of the iPhone 12 lineup, you will most likely want to make sure you can make the most of the device. That means you should be able to use all the extra features they offer for photography.

The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max sport triple-camera modules while the lower-end models have only two rear lenses. The third lens is the telephoto camera that offers 2x optical zoom for the Pro model and 2.5x optical zoom for the Pro Max model.

So, how can you make the most advantage of the extra camera and features? Make sure you will try all the following things.

Deploy the Zoom

When opening the Camera app on your iPhone, you will see an extra zoom option compared with the standard iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini. This optical zoom feature will let you take better photos at a longer distance from the subject. The zoom feature on the iPhone 12 Pro Max is also assisted by the inbuilt image stabilization for higher zoom levels.

However, remember that the longer the telephoto lens, the less light collected, so the camera app will crop a photo shot by the main lens to reduce the noise level and maintain the zoom effect.

Shooting at night

All the four iPhone 12 models is very capable when shooting in low-light environments, but the Pro Max will generate the best results thanks to its larger sensor. The camera app doesn’t have a dedicated night mode but when you shoot in low light, it will turn on automatically.

There will be a yellow icon on the shutter screen as night mode is activated. Then, an exposure time will be chosen based on the scene you’re pointing the camera at. A longer exposure time will allow more light to get into the shot, but you will need to keep the phone steady.

Provided that you can keep the phone steady or have a tripod, to let the most light in, tap on the yellow icon of the night mode to manually adjust the exposure time, which can be up to 3 seconds. Sometimes this will help you capture more detail.

By switching to the Portrait mode, you can get some great background blur effects thanks to LiDAR.

Adding extra LiDAR

One of the ways that LiDAR will improve your photos is through depth sensing, which is more accurate and faster than time-of-flight sensors. But the biggest benefit brought by LiDAr is an increase in accuracy and speed for AR apps.

There will be a lot more AR apps in the coming time, but right now, you can try the Measure app. Just point it at a person and make sure the camera viewfinder includes the full-frame, and after 1-2 seconds, the app will show an estimate of their height. This estimation is powered by LiDAR.

Using ProRAW mode

This mode is a big upgrade for the Pro and Pro Max models, giving serious photographers more control over their shots. Phone have had RAW format photos for years, which minimizes the processing and effects on the picture and lets users access the raw data captured by the sensors. The ProRAW is developed to offer you the best of both worlds.

The mode users some processing to the shot like Smart HDR and Deep Fusion but still let users adjust the color, tone, white balance, etc.

As of now, the ProRAW mode is available in iOS 14.3 beta only, but it may be launched fully in the coming time.
