Yesterday, Realme has just announced that it would launch up to three new 64MP smartphones with quad rear cameras in the Realme, Realme Pro, and Realme X. Redmi has also been teasing to launch a new smartphone with a 64MP sensor as well. Now, Xiaomi suddenly revealed that it will take a further step and launch a smartphone with a 108MP “ultra-clear” Samsung’s ISOCELL sensor in the future. With that sensor, the phone can capture photos in 9,024 x 12,032 pixels resolution, which is something that you normally see on medium format cameras, not a smartphone.

Xiaomi held a camera tech event in Beijing this week called ‘Xiaomi Future Image Technology Communication Conference’. At the event, the brand revealed some details about Samsung’s ISOCELL Bright GW1 64MP sensor that is expected to feature in a forthcoming Redmi smartphone. After the event, Xiaomi also teased an unannounced sensor from Samsung that is capable of shooting 108MP images. The sensor is claimed to be going to feature in a Xiaomi handset soon.

However, Xiaomi hasn’t revealed many details regarding the sensor, and that is also the case for Samsung. Therefore, even if you are interested, it is better to not plan your smartphone upgrades around it. Even though the 64MP camera sensor is claimed to offer better low-light camera performance over the 48MP sensor, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it also applies for the 108MP one. Unless it is physically bigger, it will reduce the amount of light that enters each pixel. You might get immense details in daylight conditions, but it might quickly fall apart when you shoot photos in low-light conditions. Moreover, having more pixels mean that the phone will have more works to do, though Qualcomm already claimed that its chipsets are capable of handling sensors with more than 100MP this year.
