Following the fires ravaging the Amazon, Apple CEO’s Tim Cook said the company would donate to help preserve the ecosystem, as well as restore the indispensable resources. Though Apple hasn’t announced the donation’s value, a filing with the SEC revealed that the amount of $5 million worth of AAPL shares had been presented by Cook himself. However, this donation is different from that of Apple.
According to the National Institute for Space Research of Brazil, there have been at least 74,000 wildfires occurring in Brazil so far this year, doubling from last year’s record.
The Amazon contributes to more than half of the earth’s remaining rainforest. For that, it’s usually considered the “lungs of the planet”. However, more than 9,500 forest fires have started across Brazil since Aug. 15, mainly in the Amazon. The situation seems to become worse than usual even when the dry season is taking place.
The president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro had to call upon 44,000 troops recently to battle the blazes spreading across several states of Amazon.
Apple and Tim Cook himself have deep concerns for the negative effects of climate change. During his speech at Tulane University this year, Cook said:
Apart from the contribution of Apple Inc. to the preservation of the Amazon, Tim Cook has planned to hand out all of his property with a “systematic approach.” Apple’s CEO tweeted on Aug 26 that Apple would give assistance to preserve the Amazon’s biodiversity and restore its indispensable forest across Latin America.
