There Is A New AI System Installed In Government Buses In Karnataka And UP

Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka, become the first two states in the country to install an AI system on buses to alert sleepy drivers and to avoid collisions.

Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka, become the first two states in the country to install an AI (artificial intelligence) system on buses’ front bumper to alert sleepy drivers as well as avoiding collisions.

While the UPSRTC (Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation) has plans on installing the system on more than 12,500 buses, the KSRTC (Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation) is going to have more than 500 buses equipped with the system. These buses primarily operate during night and on long routes. Both the transport corporations’ officials said that the result of this system’s pilot run has been extremely positive.

Both the transport corporations’ officials said that the result of this system’s pilot run has been extremely positive.

A KSRTC functionary said that the anti-collision run had been trialed for more than one year. The corporation is now testing it on 10 more buses and will soon invite tenders for the procurement of the system for more buses.

Meanwhile, Raj Shekhar, the managing director of UPSRTC, informed that the corporation has been testing the system on six buses for the past six months for the system’s efficiency assessment. According to Shekhar, after six buses were equipped with AI technology, no accident has happened.

Both KSRTC and UPSRTC have deployed the system from Sixth Sensor Technology, a Mumbai-based start-up. Paritosh Dagli, the firm’s director, said that there is a sensor placed at the bus’ front bumper. This sensor allows continuous objects monitoring in a maximum range of 180 feet. If there is any possible collision or danger, the system will sound a beep to alert the bus driver. There is another sensor located near the headlight which warns drivers whenever they fell asleep while driving.
