Tencent Launches Rs 750 Crore Fund To Help Countries Fight COVID-19

Along with other companies, Chinese tech giant Tencent has launched the fund to aid countries around the world in fighting the pandemic.

This week, Tencent announced to launch the Global Anti-Pandemic Fund, with $100 million (over Rs 752 crore) to help countries cope with the COVID-19 pandemic. The news about the fund surfaces after the launch of $100 million funds from Facebook and Netflix.

As for Tencent’s fund, it will first aid vitally important and practical health supply donations, which include protective gear among products for healthcare first responders and hospitals.

It’s noted that this is not the only nor the first attempt from Tencent to fight the pandemic. Previously, the giant tech firm set up an Anti-Pandemic fund that supported healthcare workers in China, allocating about $211 million (approximately Rs 1,588 crore) as part of the effort.

In a press release, Martin Lau, the President of Tencent, said that the ongoing pandemic is severely affecting people across the globe. He said that the world is having a difficult time and the company is committed to supporting emergency responses around the world. Lau added that using China’s experience as well as feedback obtained from worldwide hospitals, Tencent recognized that the world is in urgent need of medical supplies such as PPEs, especially when the epidemic is growing rapidly and countries are not well-prepared.

For now, the most suitable donations are healthcare supplies because countries around the world are suffering from a serious lack of face masks, ventilators, and other vital equipment.

Apart from these funds, other tech giants are also doing what they can to help governments and people cope with the outbreak of SARS-Cov-2. A few days ago, Xiaomi announced that it will donate lakhs of N95 masks with priority for hospitals and healthcare workers.
