Reports indicate that Apple is planning on shifting its manufacturing operations from China to India. And now, the Tata Group of India is looking to invest in the Cupertino giant’s pursuit.
New media reports suggest that Tata Group will spend Rs 5,000 crore to build a facility that will manufacture Apple’s components. In its report, BusinessLine mentions that the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) has allotted the group’s new entity called Tata Electronics 500 acres to set up the manufacturing plant in Hosur.
The facility was expected to be built either in Tamil Nadu or Karnataka. The facility’s inauguration ceremony was held on 27 October.
Although both TIDCO and tata haven’t released an official statement on the manufacturing plant, the report still highlights its big plans. According to the report, by October 2021, Tata will recruit 18,000 staff. Interestingly, female employees will account for 90%.
Since India, Foxconn is already in charge of assembling and manufacturing iPhone models for Apple, the new plant of Tata seems to be focused on making components for iPhones instead.
Once it is built, the Tata plant’s operations are expected to be scaled up with more investment. The expansion is said to be Rs 8,000 crore.
A unit of Titan, TEAL (Titan Engineering and Automation, will oversee the production facility’s establishment.
