Sony AI Focuses On R&D To Create A Robot Gastronomy

Sony AI has been established and will soon have offices around the world.

Since 2016 when Sony introduced the return of the Aibo robot, it seems that the company is increasingly pushing on the AI technology for the business segments to promote its products. Sony AI has been established and will soon have offices in Japan, the US, and Europe with a mission to bring world-class research and development through Sony's engineering assets. Although these assets now include robotics such as puppy robots, they are all about the Imaging & Sensing and entertainment (such as games or movies) business segments of the company.

Imaging and sensing, gaming as well as gastronomy are the major launching projects that the company is concentrating on. Regarding gastronomy, in last year’s promotion video, a concept of "robot gastronomy" has been proposed by Sony. Back in 2018, Sony, which was in a partnership with Carnegie Mellon University, said that the initial robotic research will aim to optimize the food handling process including steps of food preparation, cooking, and delivery. Sony recognized the importance of robots that are capable of handling complex and diverse tasks in food processing and their use in food processing industries. The CEO of Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Hiroaki Kitano, stated that what gastronomy robots can perform is very promising and worth waiting for.

.AI-related applications have appeared in many Sony products such as the A6600 camera, which can perform impressive autofocus tasks. Gaming products are also equipped with advanced AI and machine learning to improve cloud gaming as well as user experience, or simply make the characters in the game smarter and more interesting.
