It was leaked in summer that Qualcomm might be developing a new Snapdragon high-end platform which can operate computers rather than tablets and smartphones. Now, there are more details revealed about the chip rivaling laptops that run on Intel-based Windows 10, and iPad Pro in the future will be powered by the A12 Bionic chip.
Last year, both Android tablets and smartphones used Snapdragon 835, just like Windows 10 did. This year, Qualcomm conducted a different plan as it released a platform called Snapdragon 835 which was particularly made to operate Windows laptops. On the other hand, the Snapdragon 845 is used for high quality Android devices only. However, the Snapdragon 1000 to be launched next year by Qualcomm seems so exciting.
Well, that’s actually how we name the next Qualcomm’s chip for Windows 10. In his report of WinFuture, Roland Quandt, who used to unveil the Snapdragon 1000’s information, indicates that the new chip will be named differently. The Sanpdragon 8180, as it will be called, is a 7nm chip and it is now being tested.
An eight-core-design, which referenced Cortex-A55 and Cortex-A76, will be featured on the new SoC (system-on-chip). While four Gold clocks will run at 3.0GHz, the Silver ones will speed up to 1.8GHz. The package support will fasten LPDDR4X memory improving the quality of the performance.
According to the report, the Snapdragon 8180 will come with Qualcomm’s Adreno 680, the NPU-130, a new GPU and a neural processor.
We’ve already known that the chip’s size will be a lot larger than that on phones. The chip will have more than 8.5 billion transistors in total with a 15WD TDP.
So far, there hasn’t been any news on what producers of Windows 10 laptop will use the new Snapdragon. Yet, a “Primus” laptop will be released by Asus in the future, rumors said. The Snapdragon 8180 may be revealed in December.
Apple also introduced 7nm A12 Bionic chip lately, which are used on every 2018 iPhone, the chip comes with a quad-core GPU, a six-core CPU, eight-core Neural Engine, supports LPDDR4X RAM and comprise 6.9 billion transistors. Nothing can be ensured now but the chip must have the capability to run a Mac.
