MeitY Chooses These Universities For Digital India Program

Osmania University is one of five universities in India selected under "Digital India" programme by the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is carrying out a project named Digital India to build the ICT infrastructure in some universities. Accordingly, it has just selected five universities across the country including Osmania University.

Along with the ICT infrastructure construction, the varsity plans to spend Rs. 15 crore on Wifi services with 1,379 hotspots for the whole campus including academic, amenities, and administrative areas which cover 113 buildings, according to a university report.

Also, the report stated that the facility will benefit over 12,000 students, faculty, staff, and scholars of the university as well as help them access e-books, journals, Study Material, Open Education Resources and online libraries available across the world.

And to celebrate the 4th anniversary of Digital India Program, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad officially introduced Wifi services at Hyderabad-based Osmania University and Shillong-based North Eastern Hill University on July 1, according to the report.

Prof S. Ramachandram, Vice Chancellor of Osmania University thanked PM Narendra Modi as well as IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad for the development of Wifi services in the university. According to the authorities, the Digital India project aims to transform the country into a society digitally empowered by ensuring access, digital, digital communication, digital services, and connecting digital divide via effective ICT facilities via Hi-Speed Broadband-enabled Digital Services.
