If you think India’s economy is slowing down and people are tightening their budget, you should recalibrate your expectations. It appears Indian smartphone buyers are still more than willing to pay a total Rs. 1 lakh or even more to get the device they want.
Back in 2019, the market for premium handsets (those above 1 lakh) in India increased by 23%. Apple can take credit for this growth with its iPhone X in 2017 and iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max in 2019. Apple accounted for 85% of all shipments in this price bracket last year.
iPhone 11 Pro Max made up 42% of premium smartphone shipments in 2019. Apple’s shipment increased by 5% last year with the figure for India stood at 17%. The last quarter alone saw a hefty growth of 84% for the iPhone maker.
Here are a recap of iPhone 11 lineup in India. The 64GB and 256GB variants of iPhone 11 Pro is retailed for Rs 99,990 and Rs 1,10,900 respectively. For iPhone 11 Pro Max, the 512GB variant will set you back Rs 1,41,900 while the 256GB version costs Rs 1,21,900.
Apple’s shipment is followed by Samsung, which accounted for 15% of the total shipment of devices in the premium segment last year. The star of 2019 is nothing other than the Galaxy Fold, which is retailed in India for Rs 1.65 lakh. While having a price that not many people can afford, Samsung’s foldable phone still grasped 4% of the total shipment.
India has a large number of passionate early tech adopters who always seek to have their hands on the best and the latest. For example, Apple lovers have wasted no time to buy the iPhone 11 Pro Max. The Galaxy Fold, despite being the first version with a handful of serious flaws, are still welcomed in India, evidence of a change in consumer behavior.
What makes premium smartphones such a draw to consumers despite their price is the promise of technological advancements and innovations.
