With the local assemble, Indian customers could get iPhone XR and iPhone XS at cheaper price as Apple begins launching its India-made high-ends products in the market next month. Reuters wrote in a report that they will be put on sale in August right after the pending approvals are done.

As of now, the tech giant has only manufactured some iPhone models at Wistron’s unit in Bengaluru, including the lower-end iPhone SE, iPhone 6S, and iPhone 7. With Foxconn’s factory set in Tamil Nadu, iPhone XR and iPhone XS will be fully assembled to help Apple save high import taxes and fees. From that, we can expect the cost to significantly drop. However, the tech giant has not made any discount offerings for other iPhone models which also made in India.
In India, Apple has sold iPhones and other devices through third-party distributors such as Redington or Ingram Micro, so the local expansion could give the company a way to open wholly-owned retail stores in the country. As the Finance Minister of India Nirmala Sitharaman, the local sourcing norms for single-brand retail will be eased.

As said by Apple’s CEO Tim Cook in a May 2019 earnings call, the tech giant seemed to learn a lot as it started to put manufacture plants in India to serve the local market. He did consider India as a very important market for long-term plans, despite being a very challenging one in the short-term.
In the meantime, each iPhone XR costs around Rs 76,900 and an iPhone XS’s price stays at Rs 99,900. The iPhone XS stands in a higher segment with an OLED display and dual-camera setup, while the iPhone XR only sports LCD display as well as a single camera on the back.
