Huawei CFO's Attorneys Ask Canada To Withdraw The Extradition To The US

In late 2018, Canada arrested Meng Wanzhou, Huawei CFO and Ren Zhengfei’s daughter, following US request over accusations of Iran sanctions violations. Now, during the extradition process after Huawei CFO arrested, Meng’s attorneys are pushing the Canadian government to withdraw the extradition.

Her lawyers sent a written submission to Canada’s minister of Justice David Lametti, asking for a reconsideration of the extradition proceedings, according to the law firm on Monday. The company argues that Canada does not have the jurisdiction to prosecute Meng for the accused actions, which does not affect Canada as the United States is the country to have sanctions on Iran.

Meng, who is the daughter of Huawei’s founder and CEO, is still in Canada, under house arrest while waiting for the extradition to the US. Before being arrested, Meng was reported to have the intention to leave Huawei.

Last month, Huawei’s troubles with the United States ramped up when US President Donald Trump banned the firm by signing a national security order. Several tech giants have since suspended business with the Chinese company, such as Google and Facebook. The suspension is said to cause a revenue loss of $30 billion. Other big tech firms like Qualcomm and Intel also cut ties with Huawei. However, Google then wanted an exemption from this ban for several concerns.

The US Justice Department is pressing for the extradition and did not respond immediately to a comment request.
