Amid the US sanctions that are hindering the development of Huawei's smartphone business, the Chinese tech giant has turned its focus to technology for pig farmers as an alternative source of income.
Along with the AI tech for pig farming, Huawei is also working in the coal mining industry.
As Donald Trump, former US president labeled Huawei a threat to the US’s security, the Chinese company has been blocked from importing 5G components.
As a result of the sanctions, the company’s sales decreased by 42% in the fourth quarter of 2020.
Huawei also loses 5G development contracts in many countries like the UK for fear of national security.
Some reports claimed that the company would reduce its smartphone manufacturing capacity by 60% in 2021.
And when there is no level playing field for it, Huawei is forced to look for other sources of income. The company has moved to wearables, smart vehicles, and cloud computing services.
China’s pig farming industry is now the world’s biggest with half of the global live hogs are in the East Asian country.
Technology is playing a growing important role in the industry with facial recognition to identify and track pigs. Other tech giants like Alibaba and JD.com have already had their solutions for pig farmers.
Ren Zhengfei – the company chief executive and founder, made public a new mining innovation lab earlier this month in China’s Shanxi Province with an ambition to use technology to enable greater safety, fewer workers, and higher efficiency.
During a meeting, he said the tech giant was also expanding to tablets, televisions, and computers.
