Will Huawei CFO Be Extraditied To The US? The Answer Set For March 6

On Friday, Canada’s Department of Justice said the country could move forward with a hearing on the extradition decision of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou.

It was unknown if Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou will be extradited to the United States or not since the arrest in December 2018. But on Friday, Canada’s Department of Justice said the country could move forward with a hearing on the extradition decision.

In its release, the Justice Department said the decision is made after a thorough and careful review of the case’s evidence. The department feels satisfied that the case has met the set of requirements from the Extradition Act to issue an Authority to Proceed and there is enough evidence to verify the decision of extradition.

This news comes after a formal request from the United States in January to extradite the Huawei CFO from Canada. The British Columbia Supreme Court has set an appearance date for confirming the Authority to Proceed as well as plan the extradition hearing.

Huawei did not respond immediately to a comment request.

Early December 2018, Meng Wanzhou, Huawei CFO and daughter of Huawei’s Founder Ren Zhengfei, was arrested in Canada for violating US sanction on Iran. In particular, the United States bans on selling any equipment featuring its technology to Iran, but Meng Wanzhou was found to do business with this country. The arrest raised the already high tension between China and the US, while the CFO faced extradition to the US, the Chinese government threatened the US and Canada of severe consequences unless Meng is released. Meng was later released on bail but could not leave Canada.

Since then, the US has constantly warned other countries, including those in Europe against using Huawei’s equipment and encourage them to ban on its sale of 5G devices due to risks of spying. Amid the United States’ efforts to get other countries’ support in banning Huawei sales of telecom products, the UK said it can manage the risks when using the Chinese company’s devices. Ren Zhengfei denied all accusations of spying.
