It’s not until now that people start having more attention on their privacy due to a slew of security vulnerabilities found out recently. You can count on your own carefulness to protect yourself as much as possible, but this news may let you down for a while. According to the security firm Check Point, some latest versions of social media apps are said to contain security vulnerabilities that likely lead to cyber-attacks after leaving user data exposed. The said apps include Facebook, Instagram, and the Chinese messaging platform WeChat, listed on Google’s Play Store.

Check Point started using cross-examination to conduct the study. They checked the latest versions of all the apps mentioned above. What’s catch, the examination resulted in a warning alert for those apps – a total of three remote control execution vulnerabilities, which have been known as RCE since 2014, are still able to give hackers the ability to surpass the system. Hackers can make use of those flaws to execute code on these latest versions regardless of how many times these apps have been updated.

In addition, Check Point also examines hundreds of other apps hosted on the Play Store by using a static engine. The purpose is to scan vulnerable code packed inside these apps before it leads to a fatal flaw. For instance, hackers can even patch the vulnerable code to steal or alter a post on Facebook, access Instagram’s location data, and read WeChat messages.
As for users, installing a prestige antivirus app and checking the phone on a daily basis are some practices in urgent need.
