The Guardian reported that one of the organizers of the Google Walkout 2018 who objected how the tech giant tackled cases concerning sexual harassment has just quitted the company. As a marketing manager, Claire Stapleton has worked for both Google and YouTube for 12 years before her resignation due to retaliation from the company.
The Guardian revealed that the female employee said to other workers that her department branded her “with a kind of scarlet letter that makes it difficult to do my job or find another one.” She also confirmed that she would be unable to move to any other department within Google.
In addition, Stapleton believed she and other members of the Google Walkout 2018 were targets of the company’s retaliation for what they had done in that event. Google’s treatment, as well as its all attempts to force her to leave the company, were to deter others from conducting any other walkout in the future.
In an interview with Engadget, a Google spokesperson said,
At the beginning of 2019, Stapleton unveiled her degradation out of the initial position at Google. Even she was asked to get a medical leave when she was entirely fine. The Google Walkout organizer said she invited a lawyer to argue about her degradation. Finally, the US tech company had to agree to let her reinstate. In addition to Stapleton, Meredith Whittaker also uncovered the company’s retaliation at a Town Halls forum in the first months of 2019.
