In a bid to attract more customers to buy electric vehicles, Ford has had a plan to help them save time on finding charging stations. The US automaker has launched the FordPass Charging Network including up to12,000 charging stations which have over 35,000 plugs in North America.
Accordingly, when customers buy the company’s upcoming electric vehicles, for example, an electric SUV that is inspired by Mustang, they will be able to access the network for free within two years from the time of purchase and activating their own FordPass account.
Instead of paying in cash, customers can pay for each EV charging via the vehicle’s screen or the FordPass application. Additionally, they can also check the nearest locations to charge their vehicles.
Ford has now inked pact with Greenlots, the Shell-owned company that specializes in delivering technology solutions for EV charging network. The partnership aims to attract lots of charging companies to participate in the project. Ford hasn’t announced the names of the charging providers as participants; however, according to the Michigan-based automaker, Electrify America backed up Volkswagen will help EV owners approach DC fast chargers more quickly. With these fast chargers, it takes them about 45 minutes to charge to 80% from 10%.
According to Ted Cannis - Global Director of Electrification at Ford:
Ford hopes that the new charging network will erase EV owners’ anxiety relating to charging options. The Ford Mobile Charger will be built into electric vehicles to allow owners to charge with a 240V or 120V home outlet. Besides, they can choose to go to the Ford Connected Charge Station that is equipped with many connectivity features. However, additional payment is compulsory.
