On Monday, BSNL announced to extend the validity for mobile subscribers until April 20 so they can continue to use services despite being unable to recharge their plans. This offer is available for those with validity expiring after March 22. The move will provide relief for users who couldn’t recharge their plans before the lockdown order. The state-owned telco also said that it will provide Rs 10 worth of talk time for all prepaid subscribers that have their balance reach 0 during the India lockdown.

The Minister for Union Electronics and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad also reiterated this announcement with ANI yesterday. At the time, he said that service for prepaid users won’t be discontinued until April 20 along with a Rs 10 incentive provided starting Monday to help the poor and in need continue their work.
Several telcos and tech firms announced last week about their measures to help users during the India lockdown, which will last until April 14. PM Narendra Modi announced the lockdown order in an attempt to limit the spread of SARS-CoV-2. For instance, phone makers like Huawei, Realme, and OnePlus announced to extend the warranty period to reduce the stress on customer service. Meanwhile, telcos like Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio introduced tools for testing for the disease.

As for BSNL, the state-owned company urged its users to recharge their accounts online. BSNL’s CMD Praveen Jumar Purwar said in a statement that the company stands with users through the crisis, requesting them to go digital for plan recharging. Users can do this by using the MyBSNL app, visiting the BSNL site along with wallet services.
Even before the lockdown order, BSNL has already rolled out a Work@Home broadband plan to provide users with free internet access. The free plan was meant to encourage people to stay home and practice social distancing.
