Apple Seems To Be Considering A Notched iPad, Its Patent Hints

In a newly released patent, it seems that Apple finally realized people are using the iPad in landscape mode by shifting the device.

Patents represent what a company is having in mind, which may or may not come to life. And in a newly released patent, it seems that Apple finally realized that its iPad users are shifting the front camera for landscape mode.

The tech giant filed the patent in August 2016, which was first spotted by Patently Apple. In the patent, the iPad has a front-facing camera along with other potential components on its horizontal bezel. It’s noted in the summary that there may be a masking material, like a black ink layer, over the inactive area to block the view of internal components. In the active area, there may be an opening with an isolated inactive area or a notch or recess which a part of the inactive area protrudes into.

Apparently, notches are controversial. Some people love it while others think it’s unnecessary. In 2018, there was a notch rage when Apple launched the iPhone X. So it won’t be a surprise if that happens again when the company releases a notched iPad.

Switching the iPad to a default landscape mode also suggests that the company is pushing its tablet closer to replacing the laptop. Weeks ago, Apple announced the iPad Pro 2020 alongside a Magic Keyboard prioritizing the landscape mode over the portrait mode to make it easier for use as a laptop. However, it seems contrast because so far as we know, there’s not a single laptop that has a notch on its screen. Maybe there will be a feature that allows users to hide the notch like Samsung does with the Samsung Galaxy S10+ or something?
