According to The Information, Apple has plans to release an iPad keyboard featuring a trackpad this year. The source of The Information said that the keyboard would probably be introduced with the new iPad Pro.
Apple adding a trackpad to the iPad keyboard is yet another move of the iPhone maker to blur the line between laptops and tablets. In the last few years, the company has added some of the most typical functionalities people have with a laptop but not an iPad, like mouse support in iPadOS. However, the support is merely an extension of AssistiveTouch and you have to dive into the accessibility menu to turn it on.
With a trackpad on the keyboard, Apple might extend its support for mouse-using on iPads with updates for iPadOS coming in the next few months. Expect to see and experience more visible mouse support on Apple’s tablets.
At the annual shareholder meeting last week, Craig Federighi, Apple’s software chief told the audience to stay tuned for more updates to come to iPadOS as the company’s team was working on it. So we have reason to believe that updates are on their way to make the iPad more of a laptop this year.
Many users report satisfaction with mouse support on Apple’s tablets and the company is aware of the fact, so it might want to please users even more with making it a core functionality of the software and let us not forget the rumored new keyboard case.
The next thing we expect to see is a touchscreen on Mac.
