After launching new speakers, iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches, Apple has finally introduced new Macs – the products it started with in the first place.
The November 10 event saw the introduction of the first computers featuring Apple’s custom processors. And here are everything Apple announced:
M1 For The Mac
Apple has officially left Intel in the past by embracing its M1 processors based on the design of ARM chips.
According to the company, M1 is part of a chipset family that will power a wide range of products in the next few years. The family includes the S-series that Apple Watches run on and the A-series for iPads and iPhones.
M1 integrates processors, security, I/O components, and GPU. Its unified memory architecture allows for low latency, better performance, and high bandwidth. M1 is built on the 5nm node of Apple and has 16 billion transistors.
Performance and power efficiency will benefit from the unified memory as it allows for data access without the need to copy among several pools of memory.
Among the eight cores, four are high-performance cores and the other are high-efficiency cores.
The efficiency cores make sure that the same performance is achieved with just a tenth of power consumption.
Apple said the eight-core GPU uses only a third of the power while delivering twice the graphics performance. It claims that the GPU can execute around 25,000 threads simultaneously.
Other technologies include a 16-core neural engine capable of 11 trillion operations each second. Another highlight is a secure enclave for the best security.
macOS Big Sur Is Designed To Work With M1
By making its own software and hardware, Apple said its Macs now possessed functions like instant wake, and Safari is now 1.5 times faster with JavaScript.
Improved power management and unified memory allow Macs to handle more tasks more efficiently.
iPhone And iPad Apps Work On The Mac
Apple claims that it was helping developers to make the transition from Intel chips to M1. With Universal Apps, developers can make little changes to code to make apps work on both M1 and Intel chips.
According to Apple, Omni Group and Adobe are creating Universal Apps. Plus, Adobe Lightroom’s Universal App is arriving next month and Photoshop will be added in 2021.
Developers who can’t make the transition can rely on Rosetta to help apps designed for Intel chips work with M1 through emulation.
And finally, Apple now allows apps for iPhones and iPad to run on Macs.
The New MacBook Air With M1 Chip
According to Apple, MacBook Air powered by an M1 chip will deliver a performance 3.5 times faster than usual and 5 times faster graphics performance.
It also claimed MacBook Air running on an M1 chip is 98% faster than regular PC laptops, all while featuring no fan.
The company was confident the M1 Air is capable of video playback for 18 hours and wireless web browsing for 15 hours. The image signal processor also allows for better camera performance. For realistic images, the screen sports a wide P3 color space.
The new MacBook Air starts at $999 and education customers enjoy a $100 cut in price.
New MacBook Mini With M1
Another Apple’s Mac getting the new M1 chip is the Mac Mini, giving it’s a boost of 6x GPU and 3x CPU performance. The company also claimed that the new Mini is five times faster than the best PC desktops on the market.
The device now possesses 15 times faster machine learning abilities, courtesy of the integrated neural engine.
Connectivity-wise, the Mac Mini sports two USB-C ports with Thunderbolt support.
The device is retailed for $699, a cut of $100 compared to models powered by Intel chips.
MacBook Pro With M1
The 13-inch MacBook Pro is another device with M1 processors.
Apple flaunted 2.8 times and 3 times faster performance of the CPU and the GPU respectively. Xcode also allows developers to make apps three times faster than before.
The company also claimed 8K videos with DaVinci Resolve with no frame drop.
The neural engine also allows for 11x faster performance than its predecessors.
Users are promised 20 hours of video playback and 17 hours of wireless web browsing on the new MacBook Pro.
The new Mac Pro can also make a connection with the XDR display and achieve 6K resolution.
The M1 MacBook Pro is retailed for $1,299 and again, education customers enjoy a $100 cut from the price.
M1 chip allows for a 60% reduction of energy consumption, which complements Apple’s sustainability goals.
All new products with M1 chips are now open for pre-orders and the merchandise will be delivered next week.
