To tackle the COVID-19 outbreak, Prime Minister Narendra Modia has put the whole country under lockdown. Citizens can now only access essential services. People who go outside are worried about getting infected while maintaining a safe distance from other people. An engineering student from Lovely Professional University has created wearable devices that can help people know if someone gets too close to them.

B Tech student Prabin Kumar Das has worked with his professors to create a small IoT pendant.

Wearable meaning consists of things that people can put on like glasses, watch or closing, that can connect to the Internet or contain computer technology.

B Tech student Prabin Kumar Das has worked with his professors to create a small IoT pendant. Called Kawach, these wearable devices are for promoting social distancing. The pendant has a bunch of wearable sensors to allow the wearer to keep track of his health as well as alert them if someone is getting closer than 1 meter.

The pendant will alert the wearer if someone is getting closer than 1 meter.

The pendant also comes with a vibration motor that vibrates every thirty minutes to remind the wearer that it’s time to wash their hands.

And then there is a thermal sensor to monitor the wearer’s body temperature. If the temperature is higher than normal levels, the wearer will receive a notification on their phone.

Science and Technology’s Executive Dean, Dr. Lovi Raj Gupta said that “Kawach” was the team’s effort to control the spread of the virus. The device has already been tested internally. The team is now in search of the right partners for the device’s commercialization.

The wearable devices cost Rs 500 for each unit. If they are mass-produced, the device’s price could be lower to Rs 400 per unit.
