If you’re a hardcore gamer, it’s a laughable idea using a laptop out of all things for gaming when you could have an infinitely configurable battle-station with a desktop. Still, it doesn’t stop one particular company that has been known for its catering to the gaming community: Asus - from accelerating the development of the portable gaming industry.
This year at CES, Asus has unveiled the crazy expensive and powerful ROG Mothership GZ700GX. In April, the company has also made a grand gesture in giving the entirety of its gaming laptop line a hardware overhaul. But at IFA 2019, however, the best thing that the company has managed this year finally showed: The world’s fastest laptop display, tailored made for high-calibre gaming.
Next Tier Display
For upper-low to middle-line gaming laptops, display panels with a refresh rate ranging from 120Hz to 144Hz are the current norm. The faster 240Hz displays are present in just a few systems by bigger names such as Razer, Omen by HP, Alienware, and Asus. A quicker refreshing panel can bring out an arsenal of benefits when you’re gaming, including a reduction of blur and smoother gaming experience. There are less overall artefacts, so that, of course, will make everything even better viewing through a high refresh rate panel instead of a mediocre one.
There’s a reason why no laptops currently boast a 300Hz display panel though. It’s more than just slapping a good quality screen there: In order for you to enjoy games at 300Hz, you will also need a powerful graphics card to boost. Specifically, you need one that’s capable enough to push the frame rate to above 240 fps. The company said that the high refresh rate will help with reducing visible stutters during frame drops. The panel can reconstruct an entirely new frame in only 3.3 milliseconds, which is about the same time as the 3ms response time of pixels. All in all, the panel boasts a 25% boost in performance in comparison to displays that are being used at eSport tournaments.
The Important Dates
So what’s the name of this new laptop? It will be called the Asus Zephyrus S GX701, and it will be on the market in October.
The company also took to the occasion to mention the Zephyrus S GX502, Zephyrus M GU502, and Strix G G531 and G731. There will also be a new colour scheme in “Glacier Blue.” The company is betting on the new colour scheme to attract a wider audience, as when they were launched earlier in the year, they’re all in black. The design remains the same.
All of the new colour options will be made available by Q3 2019.
