After about 6 months since Google first introduced the beta version in Mumbai, on Wednesday, the Android app Neighbourly will arrive in Delhi and Bengaluru, and then in many other cities in India.
As a part of the “Next Billion Users” initiative set up by the tech giant, Neighbourly came to light for the first time in Mumbai on June 2018. Now, residents living in Delhi and Bengaluru will soon have an opportunity to experience it.
After that, the app will be available in the 7 other Indian cities including Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, Mysore, Jaipur, Hyderabad, and Vizag.
The Google’s senior product manager of “Next Billion Users” plan, Ben Fohner, said Delhi and Bengaluru were two cities with the highest numbers of wait lists. Google has focused on the initial research about the Android app Neighbourly in these cities where the company received much feedback relating to the information needs of the local residents.
Neighbourly is designed based on the crowdsourcing module; of which, users can share their knowledge about the cities they are living as well as give questions, answers, and useful recommendations. For now, the app only supports English and eight Indian languages.
When users browse the conversations on Neighbourly, they can follow and look for the correspondent information given by their neighborhood. What makes the app different from other social platforms is its personalization and limitation. More exactly, users can only access the specific neighborhood and this is how Neighbourly ensures the users’ personalization. According to Fohner, the number of Neighbourly users has still kept rising since 6 months ago.
Until now, there have been 1.5 million downloads of the beta version and 500,000 users are waiting to experience it. Fohner revealed no more information on the numbers of actual users.
Neighbourly may be integrated into third-party local commerce apps or paid by the cards in the future.
