The problem with karaoke is that your favorite songs may not have the instrumental version and lyrics for you to sing along. When this is the case, Youka might be your savior. It is a free-of-charge website that can convert just about any songs into their karaoke-ready versions.
Youka is the short version of YouTube to karaoke and what it does is to separate vocal from the instrument and add in lyrics it finds online. According to Andy Baio, a technologist, the website probably makes use of Spleeter, an AI tool that can separate vocals from songs.
The app can work on any song, as long as its lyrics are available. Apart from English, the website also has a handful of language options. The app works both ways so you can choose to listen to the Cappella version or just the karaoke with no vocal.
The website’s work is far from perfect though, users can still hear the singers’ voices in the background, but the vocal is relatively faint. However, it is effective and quick.
Youka even works on vlogs, besides songs. Another interesting ability of the website is to generate a karaoke version from an instrumental track. The creators of Youka said that running this free service is expensive so they planned to open source it.
That is the future though. For now, whenever you want to sing along to a song, remember Youka as it works on just about anything.
