In what sounds like a scene from a sci-fi movie, IIT Madras researchers have made a major breakthrough. The team has developed a technology that is capable of reading a person’s thoughts and convert these thoughts into written language.
Previously, Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook and Elon Musk’s Neuralink have also carried out similar research to build a brain computer interface. It is good to know that the research of IIT Madras has had positive results.
The breakthrough research team was supervised by Assistant Professor Dr. Vishal Nandigana from the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Dr. Nandigana claims that speech impaired can benefit from AI-powered technology to communicate better. Moreover, the technology can also be deployed for decoding natural phenomena like chemical signals in plants responsible for the photosynthesis process.
Whether it is decoding the human brain’s signals or nature’s signals, it is all about unraveling physical waveforms or electrical signals. Neurons in our brain create electrical signals as well as ionic currents that flow through some parts of the brain. These signals can be interpreted as language or speech.
What the team wants to do next is to use neurologists’ electrophysiological data and get the speech impaired’ brain signals to figure out what they are trying to say.
Dr. Vishal Nandigana thinks that this AI-powered technology won’t be limited to only humans as it can also be used to help science under nature’s secrets. This will help with the prediction of floods, earthquakes, Tsunamis, monsoons, and other natural disasters. He said:
The researchers are still working on the technology and it has yet been ready for commercial use.
