Women Reportedly Being Sexually Assaulted In India’s COVID-19 Quarantine Facility

At least three women were sexually assaulted, two were raped. A fourth said that she was stalked at a COVID-19 isolation facility.

In July, at various India’s COVID-19 quarantine facilities, at least three women were sexually assaulted, two were raped. A fourth says that she was stalked at an isolation facility.

Different cases in three separate states have been reported. In one case in Delhi, a 25-year-old woman was admitted to the Deen Dayal Hospital on July 20, after her testing results suggested that she was positive with COVID-19. Dr. Tufail Ahmed was reported attempting to rape her in the isolation ward of the hospital. After the patient filed a complaint to the police, the doctor was arrested in a hotel.

Two similar incidents had also been recorded at COVID care centers where asymptomatic or symptomatic patients were isolated.

On 15 July, a 14-year-old COVID-19 patient who was admitted to Sardar Patel COVID Care Centre in Delhi was allegedly raped in the bathroom of the facility. The rapist was a 19-year-old COVID patient.

The victim was among the 250 people admitted to the quarantine facility in Delhi’s Chhatarpur district.

The teenage girl said that the rapist had asked his friend, who was 20 years old to guard the door and record a video. The next day, the victim told the staff at the facility about her case. The staff then informed the police.

The facility said to be the world’s largest, is built for patients who are incapable of isolating in their houses. Both the victim and the rapist were living in the slums and went to the isolation facility with their relatives.

On July 5, when the facility was inaugurated, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police said that 1,000 security personnel would be employed to protect the safety of the patients. However, Hindustan Times reported that, in reality, there were only 100 security officials working in shifts.
