Woman Killed By Falling Tree While Wearing Noise-Cancelling Earbuds

When the incident happened, more than 10 people tried to lift the tree to save the woman’s life. But the trunk was too thick and heavy to move.

Singapore media reported that a tragic accident happened at around 8.15 am on February 18 at Marsiling Park. A 20-meter-tree suddenly collapsed, crushing a 38-year-old woman whose name was Loke Xiao Li.

When the incident happened, more than 10 people tried to lift the tree to save the woman’s life. But the trunk was too thick and heavy to move. A 65-year-old retired Filipino man called Geroge, who was one of the witnesses said that he heard a broken sound of the tree trunk at first, and then the tree started falling down. The whole process took only a few seconds.

The tragic accident happened at around 8.15 am on February 18 at Marsiling Park.

Also according to George, the woman was running at that time and she was wearing earbuds. That was why she couldn’t hear the sound of broken sound, eventually missing the opportunity to escape.

About 10 minutes later, the rescue team arrived at the scene and used a device to cut the tree to rescue the woman. However, the woman couldn’t survive the accident.

The victim’s sister told The Straits Times that her sister was wearing noise-canceling earphones at the time of the accident. At the scene, a pair of earbuds could be seen with the left one being cracked and damaged while the right one was still intact.

About 10 minutes later, the rescue team arrived at the scene and used a device to cut the tree to rescue the woman.

Her family members said that she didn’t like to exercise and just started jogging recently. George, who visits Marsiling Park almost every day for his morning workout, also said that he only saw the woman here for morning exercise not long ago.

The park management unit stated that the fallen tree was a cedar tree that was 20 years old. The last time it was examined in April last year, the tree was healthy and showed no signs of damage.

When the police informed the victim’s family about the accident, they initially thought it was a car accident, but later learned that she was exercising in the park.

However, the woman couldn’t survive the accident.

The last time a tree collapse, killing a resident was on February 11, 2017. The accident happened in a botanical garden when a 270-year-old Tembusu tree fell down and killed a 38-year-old Indian woman, Radhika Angara. She suffered a serious head injury and many broken ribs and died later at the hospital on the same day.
