While many countries have witnessed a decrease in infection rates, India is still seeing a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases. Epidemiologists warn that the peak hasn’t come yet. Healthcare facilities in India are struggling because of the spike in new cases. Most hospitals don’t have enough beds. And to deal with this, India is turning to use made-of-cardboard beds.
Although the situation isn’t as bad as Brazil of the US. Regardless, India still needs to prepare for the worst. India has come up with a portable and light-weight bed that is made completely out of cardboard.

The bed was designed so that it can be easily carried around and installed in temporary hospitals in rural as well as urban areas.
The designer of the bed also needs to consider medical use. That is why a special chemical is used to coat the bed, making it water repellent. Liquid won’t affect the structural integrity of the bed.
The bed can withstand up to 300kg while having a weight of under 10kg. A study published in the US journal NEJM stated that the coronavirus only survives on cardboard for 24 hours as opposed to three days on plastic.

One of the best things about this bed is that it does not require any tools. You don’t need a hammer or nails to install the bed. Just putting the cardboard into the slots and the entire bed will be set up in minutes. And since it is made of cardboard, the bed is biodegradable.
Of course, it can’t be used for criticals who are in extremely critical conditions. But it can be installed in makeshift hospitals, especially when there is a lack of hospital beds.

The cost of each cardboard bed wasn’t revealed publicly, but it was said to be around Rs 750.
