Oregon Live revealed that one of the world-class tech giants, Apple, has planned an investment of Rs 60 crore (equivalent to $87 million) on water. Investing millions of dollars to research and develop the latest technologies is not a strange topic towards tech companies; however, this strategy from Apple seems to take a lot of people by surprise. In fact, the investment is to keep the centers of data cool at its water storage facility.
Up to now, Apple has set up two data centers in Prineville, Oregon. To cool down them, the company must continuously supply the massive amount of water. According to the Oregon Live report, in 2016, the amount Apple consumed reached about 28 million gallons of water.
As Apple’s Vice President of Environmental Initiatives, Lisa Jackson said that the Prineville project wouldn’t only aim to meet the demand of Apple itself but it also increased the availability of sustainable and clean water when human is in preparation for the climate change’s impacts.
As expected, Apple’s water storage facility will come into operation in 2021. In the two years 2017-2018, Apple invested more than $1 billion on the facility in Oregon. According to a CulofMac report, Oregon has two primary factors to attract the iPhone manufacturer: the low land cost and benefits of taxation. Besides, cool desert climates in this location is another plus to keep its centers of data cool. In addition to Apple, Facebook also owns a data center in Prineville, Oregon.
For those want to get more information about the Cupertino-based company, it has been said to face much pressure due to its weak iPhone sales in the Indian market. The Wall Street Journal reported that there would soon be a meeting between Apple’s executives and officials of the Indian government. The fact that iPhones were sold at high prices in 2018 was one important reason for what the company suffered from in India. In January 2019, Apple’s executives will reportedly have a talk with Indian government officials in Davos.
