Two new variants of the coronavirus have just been discovered by scientists in Ohio, US.

Specifically, a team of scientists found the new mutations that make the coronavirus more infectious. This means the newly found variants can spread faster through a group of people, raising concerns over the risk of a greater increase in the COVID-19 tally in the country, where the healthcare networks are already overloaded due to the pandemic.

According to Gizmodo, one of the new variants was seen in one case only, meaning there’s no telling how far it has been spread. However, researchers found that it carries a mutation similar to the B.1.1.7 variant that was discovered in the UK recently.

The second variant is spreading much faster, featuring a deadly combination of mutations that have never been witnessed before and enhances the transmissibility of the coronavirus. On the other hand, the researchers haven’t got a full picture of the new variants and their pre-print paper remains in preparation for publication, meaning their findings haven’t undergone evaluation by peer scientists.

More pressure on the healthcare system

About this, Peter Mohler, the Chief Scientific Officier at the Wexner Medical Center of the Ohio States and the study’s co-author, said:

“It's important that we don't overreact to this new variant until we obtain additional data.”

“We need to understand the impact of mutations on transmission of the virus, the prevalence of the strain in the population and whether it has a more significant impact on human health.”

It’s obvious that the appearance of new coronavirus variants will lead to a new surge in the infection tally, further stressing hospitals and clinics.
