A twin girl and a boy born while India is in total lockdown have been named after the deadly virus itself, Corona and Covid.
The parents of the twin hope that the names will be a reminder of the struggle they have gone through to come to the world while the pandemic is taking lives all over the world.
However, the couple said that they might have a change of heart later and rename the twin. Preeti Verma, the mother, said that they wanted to make the day memorable and the delivery happened after many difficulties.
After hearing doctors and nurses calling the twin Covid and Corona, they started having the idea of the special names.
Verma went into labor at night on the 26th of March, her husband called for an ambulance via a service for pregnant women. However, the vehicle was delayed due to the rules that forbid vans and cars on the streets during the nation-wide lockdown.
The family members who would otherwise go to the Dr BR Ambedkar Memorial Hospital could not make it as trains and buses are forbidden too. The twin was born 45 minutes after the couple arrived at the hospital.
Verma faced some complications so the doctors had to perform a cesarean section. A spokesperson of the hospital said that both Covid and Corona were healthy and they had been discharged with their mother.
India has seen the number of COVID-19 cases doubling in just four days. Had the Tablighi Jamaat event did not happen, the time would be seven days, not four.
