Tripura, India Has Constructed Its First-Ever Plastic Road

Tripura Chief Minister said that it was the first time for Tripura to collect and recycle plastic wait and turn it into a 680-meter long road.

As part of the Agartala Smart City Limited project, Tripura, a state in northeastern India, has constructed its first-ever plastic road using non-recyclable plastic waste. The aim of the initiative is to reduce plastic waste for a plastic-free environment.

At the inauguration of the road, Biplab Kumar Deb, Tripura Chief Minister said that it was the first time for Tripura to collect and recycle plastic wait and turn it into a 680-meter long road.

During a review meeting in July 2018, AMC officials had been asked by Biplab Kumar Deb to construct a road of at least 500 meters long using plastic waste to reduce pollution.

And now nearly three years later, Tripura has finally had one. The top layer of the road is about 9 inches thick. It was removed to prevent the road from becoming higher. The road was constructed using a mixture of plastic and bitumen at a ratio of 60:40.

On a trial basis, the cost of the new plastic road is around Rs 70 lakh. While this is only a trial, CM Biplab added that there would be more such plastic roads to reuse the plastic waste. The plastic that is used regularly in our daily affects the quality of the environment as well as ecosystem health. Unmanageable plastic pollution is one of the alarming concerns of global environmentalists and scientists.
